Jayson Green, Geoff Garlock, Jeff Salane, Kip Uhlhorn And Justin Chearno will never appear in a fashion magazine, they don’t play Neo New Wave and have no celebrity girlfriends. They are probably the most untypical New York band ever and at the same time they embody the spirit of this city more than any of the westcoast cokeheads that moved there. They are furious libertines, who fight for freedom of speech and thought ... and they are the first band in years that coat the words "I disagree" in thick layers of heavy riffage, the biggest wall of sound since God helped out with the horns of Jericho.
Though they do reside on the hipper side of the East River, musically Panthers stand quite alone in their community. Uhlhorn posits: "We're not dancey enough for the dance people, not garage enough for the garage people." "I guess we are just the Tad of the Brooklyn scene," says Garlock. Green agrees: "We don’t have a sibling band out there that we can link ourselves to at this point, but I love a lot of what’s going on in Brooklyn so I’m glad to add to the pile."
With Things Are Strange, Green and company should have very little trouble converting any remaining haters. Yeah, even the nostalgic hardcore kids armed with Crimethinc. sound-bytes and baggy-ass Dickies.
