Whiteout, the new album from New York's Boss Hog, is an electrifying follow up to their last LP, 1995's Boss Hog on Geffen Records. It represents a huge leap forward from their past grunge-blues-sexploitation-noise-rock.

While their trademark sound is still evident -the sultry, sensual vocals of Cristina Martinez and the gutter-funk of Jon Spencer's guitar - WHITEOUT is a record that leaps ahead in terms of production and presentation.

The band employed several producers for WHITEOUT: Tore Johansson (The Cardigans), Andy Gill (Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Jesus Lizard), Jim Thirwell (Foetus) and Jim Scalvunous (ex- Sonic Youth, current Bad Seed) all lent their hands to the production chores.

While all the tracks stand out on their own, they are held together by a glossy sheen not found on their earlier, dirtier sounding efforts. Their more modern sound is also exemplified by the liberal use of loops and programming, two elements that would be unheard of in their past efforts. It should be noted, though, that Whiteout is no Boss Hog-go-electronica, but more the sound of a great rock band harnessing today's technology to sharpen their attack.

Another example of Boss Hog's more modern approach is the cd itself. The Whiteout CD is enhanced, allowing PC and Mac users to download cool screen savers, view the video for the 1st single, Whiteout, and play a fun, great looking video game. For vinyl fans, the record will be pressed on 180 gram vinyl with a super-strong cover and will include a poster of Cristina Martinez.
