With just over a month until the release of their fifth full length album, ‘Mumps, etc’ (City Slang, 8th Oct) and upcoming European tour, Cincinnatians WHY? have unleashed another sparkling hip-hop gem, "Jonathan's Hope" on the web. More details and tourdates after the jump... listen and download here! WHY? - Jonathan's Hope by City Slang This new track follows the release of the limited edition vinyl and online stream of ‘Sod in the Seed EP’ at the start of August. The 6 track EP gave a glimpse of what to expect from ‘Mumps, etc’ - a meticulous work of morbid fascination and offbeat romanticism to easily rival the highlights of WHY?’s incendiary back catalogue. Though there is a mysterious sickness (perhaps of the mind) that lurks about these thirteen songs, one might also imagine the title as describing the musically swole state of these three Midwestern men as they bring their sound into glisteningly buff focus. Yoni Wolf, brother Josiah and Doug McDiarmid are in the pocket, the unbreakable rock core at the centre of a spinning ball of sonic kaleidoscope. And all the things we love about them are still true: the grinning sun-warped choruses, that jangly Western lope, those confessionals cut with dry wit and crude details, set dancing down the odd knots of complex poetic daisy chains. It's just that ... well, all of it sounds better than ever this time around. WHY? European tour dates: ‘Mumps, etc’ track list Benjamin Gibbard has leaked the first track from upcoming record 'Former Lives', out 15th October 2012!! More information and album tracklisting after the jump, but first, you can listen to the glistening Big-Star-esque ballad that is "Teardrop Windows" here: Other cities, other plans; different friends, different dreams; former loves, former lives. After fifteen years in Death Cab for Cutie, Benjamin Gibbard didn’t make his first solo album in search of a new beginning; instead, it closes a door. “These songs span eight years, three relationships, living in two different places, drinking then not drinking” he says of the dozen tracks that comprise ‘Former Lives’. “They’re a side story, not a new chapter.” The first track from ‘Former Lives’ to make it’s way online, ‘Teardrop Windows’, is about Seattle’s Smith Tower. It began as an unabashed attempt to, in Benjamin’s words, “write a Big Star inspired song,” but quickly morphed into something else entirely. The Smith, built in 1914, was once the jewel of the Seattle skyline but has since been forced out of the frame by the iconic Space Needle and other taller or otherwise attention-grabbing structures. “To me, it represents the things we take for granted when something newer, bigger and flashier comes into our lives,” Benjamin explains. ‘Former Lives’ track list:
