Critical acclaim for Algiers by Calexico, released today on City Slang records:
"Easily their most accessible album, 'Algiers' is also Calexico at their most expansive and very, very best"
"Algiers showcases a band utterly assured and fully aware of their intoxicating potency"
“On their sixth studio album, Calexico finally sound more like a band with memorable individual songs, than a project dedicated to creating audio soundscapes evocative of the American southwest. Burns’ voice imposes its own character on the songs – a haunting blend of mystery and trepidation tempered with longing.”
“The core duo of Joey Burns and John Convertino create an atmosphere rich in longing and emotional ferment.”
“Simply stunning, overflowing with confidence and creativity, the production is a feat of good taste and craftsmanship, and Joey’s voice has never sounded so wonderful. Their best album in a long, long while.”
“‘Algiers’ is everything we know Calexico to be: lucid with grit and tempered with melody, easily the equal of their career’s best work.”
“The perfect marriage of their wide-ranging skills, brimming with engaging, atmospheric soundscapes. Recording in the New Orleans suburb of Algiers appears to have done the trick with some of the city’s musical magic infusing their work.”
“Named after the riverside New Orleans district it was recorded in, the album is soaked through with the city’s musical heritage. The results are beguiling… Tones emerge like spreading watercolours; lyrics speak from the page and imagery blooms”
‘Algiers’ is a Calexico album unlike any other. More forceful, immediate and polished, whilst still possessing the bewitching musical interplays of old”
“Algiers reveals itself to be a warm and compassionate affirmation of the band’s deep-rooted DNA, with enough fresh twists to keep this compelling story moving forward.”
“Algiers traverses forward with a vivid sense of exploration whilst hardly failing to impress.”
“The sad twang of a pedal steel and Joey Burns’ rich lyrical imagery draw you in, and depth and craftsmanship is slowly revealed.”
“Convertino and Burns have found a way to deepen and broaden their sound without compromising any of their distinctive aesthetic.”
“As ever, Algiers is a refined, consistent and beautifully textured set of songs… Seven albums in, Calexico have lost none of their power to evoke and enthrall.”
“Endlessly listenable and beautifully performed, Algiers is another fine entry into this dependably excellent band’s catalogue.”
